Car thieves are ‘bloody mongrels’ Jacob Chandler

Workers at a Brightwater car yard say thieves who stole one of their cars and left it on the Spooners Range without it motor are “bloody mongrels”. A salesperson at Dowell Wholesale Cars, Vanessa Gilbertson says they noticed a car was missing last Thursday morning. When it was discovered to be a $12,000 Mitsubishi Triton ute she took to social media to spread the word of the missing car. It was found two days later on the Spooners Range, missing its engine, radiator, tailgate, spare tyre and tool box. It also had its dashboard and windows smashed. “We’re not happy, they’re just bloody mongrels. “The insurance company believe it was targeted for the engine because it not a common vehicle to be stolen.” Although upsetting, the theft isn’t thought to be linked with a recent spate of car thefts in

the region. Last week, Nelson police arrested two teenage boys in connection with the thefts. Police say the offenders are searching for cars that are unlocked. They then take anything of value and, if the keys are still in the car, they take it for a joyride. “We have had very few cars broken into. In the majority of these cases people have left their car unlocked and with keys inside. “Offenders are telling us they go around trying car doors and when they find one unlocked they’re straight in. They’ll take anything of value and if the owner is generous enough to have left the keys as well, they’ll take the vehicle for a spin as well,” says Senior Sergeant Shane Miles. Over the past month, 26 cars have been stolen from the wider Nelson region. “My message to the public is lock your car, even when it’s parked at home,” says Shane.

Tony Cook has always had a passion for slot car racing, it started back in 1967 when he stumbled across a commercial raceway in Bolt Road, Tahunanui. Once a very popular hobby and sport, sadly, there are no commercial race tracks in New Zealand nowadays, however, Tony says the sport is making a resurgence. “Around 12 years ago, the Nelson Slot Car Racing Club went into hiatus, but a friend approached me

about four years ago and said that we should start it up again. The club awoke from its slumber and it just all grew from there,” says Tony. There are now 18 members in the Nelson Slot Car Club, with other members from outside the region travelling to Tony’s property in Hope to take part regularly. Last year, Tony organised the first NSR Challenge Cup which saw 27

It involves cars racing against others that are identical in terms of wheels, tyres and specs, and rules are set which makes for very competitive racing,” says Tony. Tony believes that the resurgence in popularity can be attributed towards people aged between 40 years and 60 years who were involved in slot car racing when they were younger taking it up again in their later years

when they have more time and money available. It is a family affair for Tony, with wife Sue also involved as race controller and running the computer operated track. “I really enjoy racing slot cars. It is like the real thing in some ways, it is a great feeling when you have a car beside you lap after lap, you spend all day working on your car and then it is a challenge so far as in getting the car to handle the track,” says Tony. The escalation of elder abuse has stretched the resources of Age Concern Nelson-Tasman resulting in the Richmondbased service increasing staffing levels and extending its Oxford St offices. Age Concern Nelson-Tasman opened its extended and refurbished offices on Tuesday and manager Sue Tilby says the upgraded facilities are needed to cope with the increasing demand for their services. Sue says Age Concern helped out around 3000 senior citizens in the region last year including some people who are suffering from shocking incidences of elder abuse and self-neglect. “We have gone to see people in houses where there were vermin running around very visibly everywhere and open sewers. One person we saw lived their life sitting in a chair because they had mobility issues

A Richmond school was broken into and had eight i-Pads stolen over Queen’s Birthday weekend. Two St Paul’s classrooms were broken into and the i-Pads stolen from where they were charging. Principal John Dorman says the only people disadvantaged by the situation are the children who need i-Pads the most. “It means we haven’t got enough devices to share between the students, some children bring their own devices to school, but it is those kids who don’t own devices who are the ones that will really suffer because of it, it is very disappointing,” he says. A teacher arrived at the school to do some work on Sunday afternoon and noticed two teenage boys hanging around the school grounds. When the boys saw the teacher, they quickly left the premises. She looked around the school but found no damage, so did not report it to authorities. When another teacher arrived

Child safety Museum should be under one roof says outgoing CEO measures recommended Safekids Aotearoa statistics show that 877 children were hospitalised for injury in the NelsonMarlborough District Health Board’s region from 2008 to 2012 with two per cent of these injured by assaults. The stats released this week also show that 13 children died because of their injuries with the most common cause of death being suffocation which caused five deaths. Ninety-six per cent of the 877 injuries were unintentional, with falls being the most common cause of injury of all age groups up to 14 years. Poisoning was the second highest cause of injury for 0-4 year olds at 18 per cent while bike crashes, collisions and burns were also common. Fractures were the most common type injury accounting for 64 per cent of the admissions with open wounds (10 per cent), internal organs (eight per cent) and superficial contusions (five per cent) also prevalent. Forty-one per cent of the injuries occurred at home with 17 per cent at school, 11 per cent in sports areas and seven per cent on the roads. Safekids Aotearoa says the number of injuries could be reduced by the district health board introducing a safety education programme. It also recommended making child safety measures a key priority within the DHB’s health and strategic plans. The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board could not be contacted for comment.

Out-going museum CEO Peter Millward says the region should have a museum under one roof, not “five miles apart”, as it is now. Peter announced his retirement last Friday after seven years as the chief executive at the Nelson Provincial Museum. Currently, the museum has two buildings, the research facility at Isel Park in Stoke and the exhibition and education facility at Trafalgar St. He told Nelson Weekly that the museum’s current buildings are its most pressing issue. “The research facility is unfinished business from my point of view and something needs to be done urgently. When they moved the exhibition and education part into town they actually broke the museum into two pieces, and some of the problems we face now are undoubtedly caused by that.” He says having the museum in Trafalgar St is important, so he’d like to see the research facility moved close by. “But it’s not going to happen without some capital input and the two councils are both facing their own infrastructure issues, but the museum is now in the position to help itself.” During Peter’s rein, the museum has paid back $1.5 million of interest-bearing debt. But it still owes an interestfree loan to both Nelson City and Tasman District councils.

At 67, Peter says he’s not the right man to lead a major fundraising project to make a joint facility happen. “But there is no question that if it is co-located with its own archives it has greater potential than one that operates under separate roofs, especially when they’re five miles apart, like ours.” Peter’s retirement was announced along with that of the chair of the Tasman Bays Heritage Trust, Terry Horne. Current deputy chair, Aaron Brown, has been appointed Terry’s successor. Terry says that Peter has lifted the public image of the museum, overseen some

outstanding exhibitions, and leaves the museum in a sound financial position with increasing admission numbers. Peter says his proudest moment in the job was at this year’s Gallipoli commemorations. “The way people in the city got involved with everything to do with Anzac Day has been fantastic. Right from people identifying photos that have been in Nelson Weekly to people coming into the museum and saying ‘there’s my father’s name on the wall’. It was humbling and that whole project was phenomenal.”

Helicopter rescue for hypothermic tramper: A 24-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man from Christchurch were rescued from the Boulder Lake track behind Takaka, last Saturday. After entering the track late in the day, the couple had problems finding the route in darkness and horrendous weather caused one of the party to become hypothermic. The Nelson-Marlborough Rescue Helicopter was sent in after the tramper’s condition began to deteriorate. Two months ago, the Waimea Weekly published a story about Richmond cerebral palsy sufferer Kevin Jourdain having his scooter-style kick bike stolen. The expensive kick-bike was his main form of transport and Kevin has been struggling to get around on foot and by bus since it was stolen. But last week, Kevin was all smiles again after Village Cycles owner Jim Matthews and the Waimea Weekly gave him a brand new set of wheels. “I was in shock when it was stolen,” Kevin says. “It was my only form of transport so I’m so happy and grateful to get another one.” Kevin uses the kick-bike, which is a special adult, high-speed scooter, for his job delivering the Waimea Weekly and for travelling to the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology in Nelson where he is studying graphic design. Jim says he was happy to help out when Waimea Weekly publisher Steve Page suggested they buy Kevin a new kick bike. Jim had also come to the rescue giving Kevin a flash kick-bike after his scooter was stolen a few years ago. “We’ve got to know him because he delivers the paper here,” Jim says. “He’s a very likeable kid so we’re happy to help him. “Life is already pretty tough for Kevin with his disability so very disappointed when we heard someone had stolen his kick bike. It’s good to see him scooting around the town again.”

Founder’s Book Fair, Wednesday, June 3: Organisers of the Founders Book Fair were thrilled with this year’s results. The fair is a major fundraiser for the park and now the total has come in a list is being compiled of projects that the park would like to undertake. There were 3000 banana boxes of books that locals managed to work their way through from May 30 until June 7, leaving just 100 books unsold. This year’s fair managed to raise over $128,000 and organisers would like to thank those who donated books, their loyal customers, and volunteers; many of whom were completely new to helping run the fair. Loggers support rescue helicopter, Wednesday, May 19: Last month, Waimea Weekly reported on a fishing competition hosted by Fraser Logging that raised money for the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter. Included in the article was a list of sponsors, but one of the major sponsors, Goughs, was mistakenly left off.

A dozen new motorbikes to be added to classic collection The “living and breathing collection” of classic motorbikes on Haven Rd will take another almighty breath this week when 12 new bikes are revealed. The incredibly rare bikes, worth around $2 million, were recently bought from auction houses in the United States and shipped to Nelson, where they were reassembled and are now ready for display. NZ Classic Motorcycles operations manager John Shand says the bikes will be unveiled at a special evening next week. “They came from auction houses in the US. There was an old guy, his name was EJ Cole, and he was 89 years old. He had 215 motorbikes and found out he couldn’t get his leg across most of them, so sold them.” John says some of the current bikes will make way for the new additions, in keeping with owners Tom and Heather Sturgess’ wishes of a “living collection”. “We don’t call this place a

museum, we hate that word, because that’s where you find fossils. This is a collection and it’s a living collection. You’re never going to come and get bored, there will always be new bikes and new attractions.” Included in the new additions is a “Ner-A-Car”. It was designed for ladies so they could step through it. The biggest attraction will most likely be the Britten “pre-curser”, the bike built before the iconic Britten. John says very few people have seen it up close. “This is the bike that nearly won at Daytona in 1991. But the race winner on the warm-down lap did this big wheelie, looked at the Kiwi riders and said, ‘ha ha ha, your bike isn’t fast enough’. “John Britten was rather peeved at this antic so went away to develop a faster bike – the Britten. You know the rest.” NZ Classic Motorcycles is open to the public six days a week.

Rate rise 'disappointing': It is disappointing that even those Nelson councillors who campaigned at the election on keeping rate rises reasonable have opted for increases well above the inflation rate. This is an attack on the middle class and undermines the low-wage and low income ratepayer constituency in Nelson. With only a very few exceptions, like Cr. Tim Skinner, councillors voted for almost every non-core service spending item to finance pet projects and wish lists. Meanwhile, our infrastructure is badly in need of improvement or repair. As long as councillors are voted in with attention only to name recognition, Nelson will get the local government it deserves, and the rates will double again in less than ten years. Dan McGuire.

Nominated Nelsonians benefit from Nomin-eat A group of community-minded cooks are helping people through tough times with their very own version of meals on wheels. The group of 20, featuring 10 adults and 10 youth, met at Destiny Church and were kicking around ideas about how they could help the community, when the idea of “Nomin-eat” was settled upon. Nomin-eat asks for nominations through its Facebook page for those who could use a free meal. The group then cooks a batch of 50 meals and delivers it to those who they feel are the most deserving. Founding member Joni Nacagilevu says last month they cooked enough lasagne for 50 main meals

and then delivered them over the next week. He says nominees included those who were recovering from surgery, solo parents with plenty of kids to feed and some who were just going through a tough time financially. “Sometimes, people just need that hand and hopefully this can just take that pressure off. It’s not a hand-out where we pity them, it’s just a hand-along,” he says. Joni says the project is funded by its members at the moment but he’d like to attract sponsorship in the future to help it grow. He says nominations are open for two weeks, then the group get together one night and cook enough food for the 50 meals and

Young professionals after fresh blood Nelson Young Professionals are after some new committee members, with the current president set to leave the region. Michelle Byczkow has been the head of the networking group for two years, but is heading off to London and says the group would like some fresh blood. “The nature of the group means that we have people come and go, so we’re looking for the next wave of young professionals.” Nelson Young Professionals was founded

in 2009 and encourages anyone who would like to meet new people or enjoy the events they host to come along. The biggest event on the NYP calendar is the winter ball that last year attracted around 150 people. Mahana School to celebrate 100 years Mahana School will be celebrating their 100 year anniversary in September and are asking all past and present pupils to the school to join in the festivities. The celebrations begin on Friday, September 11 with a welcome home and invitation to wander through the school to see how some things have changed and how some things still remain the same. Past pupils are encouraged to join in on a tour with current students to share knowledge and experiences of the school. That evening a centenary school production will be held at the Upper Moutere Community Centre. Festivities will continue on Satur-

day, September 12 with an afternoon tea and photo display from each decade from 2pm onwards and a celebration dinner and dance at Woollaston Estate Winery that evening at 6pm. The Sports Fishing For Youth Trust was set up to give young people the chance to get into the outdoors and catch a trout or salmon. Age is no barrier to sport, in fact it is a prerequisite for players attending Table Tennis Nelson's social seniors group at Saxton Stadium with their oldest member, Lionel Wells, turning 95 in October. The group, which meets every Monday and Friday morning, has about 45 players enjoying the exercise and social interaction. Although many of the players are new to the sport, that certainly can't be said about Lionel, who has been playing for an incredible 82 years. And that probably makes him the most experienced player in the country. "I started playing when I was 11 or 12 and haven't stopped," Lionel, who is a

retired fisherman, says. "When I started in Nelson we played in the Sports Hall, but we've moved around since then to places like the YMCA and Ngawhatu, and now Saxton Stadium. "I used to play competitively. I was ranked No2 in my age-group in New Zealand at one stage, but now I just play because it's good exercise and it's a good way of meeting people." However, Lionel hasn't finished his competitive playing days just yet, competing in the last two South Island Masters games in Nelson, winning silver in the mixed doubles with Thelma Mathieson and two bronze medals in 2013. And he hopes to line up in this year's Master Games which start in Nelson on September 26.

Table Tennis Nelson's social seniors play at Saxton Stadium on Monday from 9am to 12pm, and 9am to 11.25am on Fridays. Entry costs $4 on Friday and $5 on Monday. Morning tea is provided. The Council offers a $20 discount on compost bins at participating retailers (search ‘composting’ at www.tasman.govt.nz). Remember to wrap sharp objects like broken glass. No flammable or dangerous materials please.

HOW DO I FIND OUT WHAT DAY MY BIN WILL BE EMPTIED? Each recycling bin is assigned to a specific street address. The collection day is written on the sticker – this is the day for both rubbish and recycling collections. So, for example, if it says “Tue” then your collection day for weekly rubbish bags is Tuesday. It also means that your fortnightly 007 Bond Street recycling collection will be Bin # Tue 1 on a Tuesday. A year 13 Waimea College student has been selected to play in the country’s senior women’s volleyball team. Georgia Davies got her first call up to the senior squad to play in an invitational tournament in Tahiti later this month. The side is coached by Tasman’s Alister McKenzie, who says the team’s long-term goal is working towards the Asian Championships in 2017 and developing a solid base of players to select from. “It is a reasonably young team but we have a few more experienced players available for this tournament who’ve returned from overseas, ex-Waimea College player Katie Adamson has returned from a scholarship in the USA and Francesca and Gabriela Edmondson are also back from the USA plus Francesca Kirwan is available from Italy which brings in some experience to the team,” says Alister. Georgia will make her debut for the New Zealand senior women’s volleyball team at the tournament after previously playing for New Zealand at age-group level.

“Georgia has been playing good volleyball a couple of years now for Waimea College and her club side, she deserves an opportunity. It will be good to see how she steps up to play at the next level,” says Alister. Georgia says it was a real surprise to receive a phone call from coach Alister telling her she had made the team. “I feel honoured to be selected in a team alongside such good players, especially the Waimea College girls, Katie Adamson and Freyah Watson [a non-travelling reserve] who have been inspirational and mentors to me. “I have been really lucky to have received good coaching over the years too and play with a great team at Waimea College. I am looking forward to the challenge of playing at a much higher level and gaining experience,” says Georgia. The team will play against Tahiti and New Caledonia at the invitational tournament to be held in Tahiti, June 16 to 26. “It will be tough competition as a number of their top players are based in France, we have to work really hard to compete, it will be a good test for us,” says Alister.

Wakefield's Robert Stuart may be the official trainer of Dana Dawn which won the More FM Mobile Pace at the Nelson Harness Racing Club's Winter meeting on Sunday, but it was his wife Sue who played a key role in the win. The Stuarts completed a successful meeting with Dana Dawn finishing second on the first day before winning by three-quarters of length on Sunday. It was Dana Dawn's first win from nine starts and Robert says Sue was largely responsible for preparing the three-year-old gelding for its maiden win. "I'd been really busy at work up

until we finished in May, so Sue was doing all the track work with him – it's been a good partnership," Robert says. "Sue deserves most of the credit and so does (driver) Samantha Ottley - she's driven him four times now and all four have been great drives." Robert and Sue race Dana Dawn, who they lease from Teapot Valley owner-breeder Wayne Jennings. Wayne qualified the horse before leasing him to the Stuarts last August and Robert says "he has always shown a bit of ability but just needed time to mature". Waimea Old Boys Rugby

More at stake than a trophy Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys may be playing the Tasman Trophy club rugby final against Taylors Contracting Wanderers at Jubilee Park this Saturday but there is much more at stake than one trophy. The game is also part of the Car Company Nelson Bays senior competition and Waimea coach Mark Milne says that has always been their main mission for the season. “It’s the round-robin as well, so the emphasis is on that rather than just the final,” Mark says. “Sure there’s a trophy up for grabs and that’s important but the Nelson Bays competition is our priority.” Although Waimea retained their unbeaten record when they defeated Marist 30-17 last Saturday, Mark insists that Wanderers are the form team going into the final. And Wanderers clinical 55-9 victory against a strong Stoke team suggests he could be right.

“Stoke are starting to go very well and Wanderers were far too good for them. Wanderers have been stringing together some good wins - they are definitely hitting form at the right time so it’s going to be a tough game.” Mark says he was happy with their lead-up to the final, repelling a determined Marist challenge at Trafalgar Park. The only area of concern was the set pieces with Waimea conceding too many free-kicks in the scrums. “I always thought Marist would be tough and they were. They have been playing well and I knew they’d have a real crack at us. “But we played well enough to win. We are in a good space at the moment but we’ll need to be against Wanderers.” Captain Ben Coman, Luca Roden and Brad Hemopo scored tries in last Saturday’s win against Marist. Saturday’s final kicks off at Jubilee Park at 3pm.

The Waimea women’s team had a win and loss in their 10-a-side games played at Sports Park Motueka starting with a comprehensive 59-0 win against Riwaka before losing to Motueka High School 38-29. Coach Steve Curtis says the first game against Riwaka was a lot closer than the score suggested with the Riwaka pack proving highly combative. Steve says Waimea played well and was leading Motueka early in the second half until injuries and fatigue took their toll. “It was actually quite a good

game against Riwaka. Their forwards were really competitive but our backs were too good. “We also played well against Motueka until we lost our centre Jess Foster to injury. It was also our second game for the day and Motueka’s first so they were able to get around us on the outside as we got tired.” Steve says they play the last round-robin games at Riwaka this Saturday before playing the semi-final and final the following week. Federal young guns learn tough lesson

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club Winter is hotting up! Fishing around top of the south area in winter is awesome. It seems to get better and better as it gets colder. If you don't have a reasonable size boat to get up round D’Urville island or out further-a-field, then book a charter trip to get out to the unreal scenery and variety that the outer sounds areas have to offer. In early winter, some of the species breed and other go into deeper waters to "hibernate" in the water that actually stays warmer the deeper it is. This is when fish school up in huge numbers in areas of substantial food sources and their feeding habits change to adapt to the conditions. Kingfish, snapper, groper, trevally, tarakihi, john dory, warehou are just some of the species that frequent the same areas at this time. Get some advice from the local fishing shop staff, buy some reasonable gear and get out and enjoy the Tasman Bay off season, "out in the deep". So if someone asks you to go fishing

out deep, then take a quick cement pill and get up early, get your thermals on, grab some expensive jigs and sinkers and have an awesome day out! If you catch some good fish that is a bonus. Then offer to pay your way with travel costs, as its not cheap to own a boat and tow vehicle nowadays. Winter weather can provide some very settled days and this is reflected when those days fall during the week and I hear a mate say we will be the only boat out there, and that night they report back to say 12-20 boats up there. With all this increased pressure on our local fishery, I must encourage fishos to only take what they need for a feed for them and their immediate family. Some days fishing can be hot, and not every fish needs to be taken back home, with catch-and-release another great option, including the 'feel good factor' of watching those hard fighting fish head back down to the depths after a great battle. Enjoy our 'hot' winters.

The young guns of Federal Black had the chances, but not the nous, to overcome Marlborough side Arotea Kiwi at Saxton Field on Saturday. The four-team premier grade is dominated by Tasman this year, which is undefeated after three rounds, but has had a couple of close calls with draws against Federal Titans. Tasman are favourites to take out the title this year, according to Nelson Hockey development officer Craig Brett. “Tasman are a strong team with guys who have national hockey league experience, so they are the team to beat.” Federal Titans are made up mainly of older players, with the club’s other team, the top emerging talent. Last year Federal won the competition with a combination of the two teams. There are five senior mens hockey grades in Nelson and five womens grades. In the women’s top grade, Tasman and Federal are the two top teams.

I won’t forget those photos of Mr Fa’avae and his grandson’s rescuers wet and wrapped in blankets. Much heroism arises in response to adversity, and a lot of it we don’t see — the car accident rescuers didn’t seek publicity. When the adversity is a personal tragedy the heroism is often unrecognised.

Available on DVD, it carries an R rating with some brief nudity and some language that may offend some viewers (but there is not much of it). The movie contains a little bit of everything – action, romance, humour. I find British comedy is always so much better than US comedy! Director Peter Chelsom keeps the plot moving along at a rollicking pace, with a few unexpected twists. Clever cartoon clips bring a delightful note of whimsy. The best movies entertain while provoking a little self-examination. This movie does just that with the premise that sometimes to find yourself, you have to get a little lost.

At the request of the adjacent landowners, Tasman District Council is notifying its intention to stop a section of unformed legal road of 7344 square metres situated adjacent to the formed Teapot Valley Road. The road stopping application is being made jointly by two adjacent landowners. The total width of Teapot Valley Road (including the existing formed road) in this area will be reduced from an average width of 47m to 15m, which provides an adequate road corridor for the future. Adjacent to the area proposed to be stopped is a small area of former Reserve Land. This is proposed for disposal to one of the landowners, but will be dealt with separately to the road stopping. Rates Rebate Deadline The rates rebate deadline for 2014-2015 rating year is quickly approaching. Applications MUST be in before 30 June 2015 to be accepted. The Rates Rebate Scheme operates under the Rates Rebate Act 1973. The purpose of the Scheme is to provide a subsidy to low income home owners on the cost of their rates. The maximum rebated for this rating year is $605. Forms are held in each of the Council’s offices. These have a Rates Rebate Income Eligibility Table on the front. The property you are applying for must be your principal place of residence. You cannot claim a rates rebate for the rates payable on a property that is used principally for business, farming, commercial or industrial purposes, or a home that is not your usual place of residence. Want better rural broadband access? So do we! The Council is hosting a survey quizzing residents on their internet speed and access. We need your help to get an accurate picture of what internet access is like for Tasman residents so we can apply for government funding to help improve the situation. The idea of this survey is to gain information on: 1. Demand for broadband and mobile Internet services for home, community and business use across our District 2. Areas with no (or limited/poor) service By completing this survey, local people can help clarify where the greatest needs and demand are in the region. This will support our application for government funding for the next phase of fibre deployment in towns, the next phase of broadband in rural areas, and coverage of what are known as ‘Mobile Black Spots’. There are limited funds available for the extension to the rollout and the Government has signalled the most productive and appropriate needs will be met first. The goal of the application is faster and more reliable internet access in our region. You can support this work by completing the survey yourself if you live in Tasman, or passing it on to friends, neighbours and associates. The more responses we have, the stronger our application.
